What is the role of halter or performance judges at AQHA shows?

Judges act as impartial evaluators who apply the defined criteria for each class and ensure every contestant follows the safety and sportsmanship rules. In halter classes, that means judging the horse’s conformation, quality, balance, and overall presence against the class standard. In performance classes, it means assessing how well the rider and horse perform the required tasks or patterns, checking for control, accuracy, and responsiveness, while sticking to the rules for tack and equipment. Across both types, they enforce safety practices and sportsmanlike conduct, and penalties can be applied for unsafe handling, improper gear, or unsportsmanlike behavior. This broader responsibility—not just a single narrow task—best captures what judges do at AQHA shows.
